Minoxidil Hair Regrowth Products

Throughout the years science has discovered many cures for many different ailments, disorders and diseases. Sometimes these are important, life saving medications or therapies, other times they are just a matter of creating greater convenience. Of course there isn't a cure for everything, although researchers will search. One of those things is male pattern baldness.

Although there is no life changing pill or magic spell you can use to completely reverse or cure male pattern baldness (wouldn't that be amazing!) science has made some interesting progress on ways to help your follicles to go back to their old ways of producing hair once they've fallen victim to hair loss.

While many different kinds of medications have been experimented with and tested, to date only two have been approved by the FDA because of their outstanding success in clinical and controlled testing. One of these is minoxidil.

Minoxidil was originally administered orally and was designed as a medication to treat high blood pressure. It was found to have the interesting side effect of altering the balding process, more specifically slowing it down, or even reversing it. Once this was learned the drug was turned to use specifically in the treatment of hair loss.

Minoxidil hair regrowth medications have been altered from the blood pressure medications and are no longer taken orally. It comes in the form of a topical foam applied to the scalp. This way the area that needs it most gets most of the drug, which can therefore be more effective.

There are many different products that utilize minoxidil hair regrowth drugs as their foundation. Some are sold under the commercial brand names of Rogaine or Regaine. Others are sold as a generic brand. Assuming the concentration of minoxidil is the same, these different brands have no difference other than their name.

The foamy minoxidil hair regrowth medications are applied to the scalp and are most effective when left in for four hours before being washed out. Usually once the solution dries, the hair can be styled as normal, but some prefer to wash it out and may leave it in the hair for as short as 40 minutes which will reduce it's efficacy.

As with most treatments of this kind, minoxidil is not as effective for one person as it is for the next. In a 48 week study it was shown to increase hair regrowth in 51% of men using the 5% minoxidil solution. Those rates went down with those using lower concentrations. Hair regrowth was found in frontal scalp regions with moderate to great hair regrowth apparent.

There are a few important things to bear in mind about minoxidil hair regrowth products. Hair loss will return after a period of non-use of the product. As mentioned, this is not a cure, but a treatment solution. Also, because the minoxidil must come in an alcohol solution, some experience and itchy, dry scalp as well as dandruff.
